Plane

There are only a couple of airports in Eritrea. These are Asmara International Airport in the capital Asmara and Massawa International Airport in the coastal city of Massawa. Nowadays, Asmara is the only airport doing international flights. EgyptAir serves Asmara daily to/from Cairo; Eritrean Airlines fly to/from Jeddah and Milan. Flydubai flies from/to Dubai. Nova Airways and Sudan Airways serve the Asmara- Khartoum segment whereas Turkish Airlines flies from/to Istanbul, and Ethiopian Airlines serve the Addis Ababa-Asmara route.

Train

There is a prime tourist train line connecting Asmara and the port city of Massawa. No other domestic or international railways in Eritrea.

Car

One can enter Eritrea driving (4WD) from Sudan crossing Kassala border with a proof of ownership of the vehicle you are driving; rentals are not accepted. Bear in mind that the bureaucracy of the border crossings may take some hours, so start in the morning or early afternoon from Kassala in Sudan as it is not possible to enter Eritrea after dusk as border posts are closed.

Public Bus

There are Sudanese taxis serving daily public transport between Kassala in Sudan and the Eritrean border, and Eritrean taxis travel between Eritrean border to Tessenei of the Sudanese border. There are public buses driving from Asmara to neighboring cities and towns.

Boat

Sadaka Shipping Lines and Eritrean Shipping Lines serve the route from Massawa to Jeddah. They serve mainly Muslim pilgrims, and it is quite difficult for non-pilgrims to enter or transit the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia through this line. Private sailings or cruisings shall get a special permit upon arrival in the ports of Massawa and Assab. This permit helps to re-fuel, buy supplies, and/or make repairs.
