Day 1: Fly to Mekele and Drive to Hame Ela

From Mekele, the assigned vehicle and staff will directly take you to Hamedila via Berhale. The Danakil Depression can be said to ‘begin’ here. It is one of the most amazing regions of the world, but is nonetheless spectacular, full of eye-catching colors, as in the sulfur springs. The desert has several points lying more than 100 meters (328 ft.) below sea level. En route you see many long caravans going to the salt mines and others coming out of the Danakil with their salt loaded camels. Here, the landscape is beautiful, the ground shows many shades of red and yellow from the hot water, acids, and minerals spurting up from the ground.

You will also visit Lake Asale, which is the salt lake from which the Afar nomads extract salt. Lunch and possibly even tea with the village elder. A slow, but spectacular drive through-hardened magma fields bring us to the base of Mount Ertale where we pause to rest and wait out the heat before our trek. As the sun sets, we leave behind the jeeps and set out for a three-hour hike, accompanied by a camel caravan carrying gear and water, to the edge of Mount Ertale. We came here for a night lit by the stars and glow of the nearby volcano.
