Sometimes it’s best to slow down and truly experience a country on foot. Our hiking packages range from gentle strolls to strenuous mountain climbs.

Ethiopia

Ethiopia’s most popular trekking destination is the Simien Mountains. The pretty standard trekking route includes three nights of camping in the mountains, but there are plenty of opportunities for day trips or longer hikes depending on your fitness level and general interests. Starting from the stunning Simien Mountains, reaching up to the highest point in the country, Ras dejen, one can hike to the rock hewn churches of Lalibela passing through the majestic lowlands of Tekeze River and Sekota.

On these hikes you’ll see gelada baboons lounging on the hillsides, endemic birds soaring above mountain peaks, Mountain Nyala, and the elusive Ethiopian wolf. These highland landscapes reward those who reach the summit with breathtaking views.

Also popular are the majestic Bale Mountains, where the second highest mountain in Ethiopia, Tulu Dimitu, is found

Kenya

Although any fit trekker has a good chance of reaching Point Lenana of Mount Kenya, the ascent to the summit, which is topped by twin icy peaks called Batian and Nelion, is a demanding 5.10 technical climb through ice, scree, and rock. Climbers should be experienced and well-prepared. There are nearly 30 technical routes to the summit, but the most popular route is on the South East Face, approaching the mountain via the Chogoria route. This climb will take approximately five to six days. The final approach to the summit requires a steep ascent of a tarn followed by a crossing of the massive Lewis Glacier to reach Nelion. The best time to trek to Mount Kenya is through July to October.

Mount Longonot is a 13.5-kilometer, highly traveled loop route in Kenya’s Rift Valley that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated difficult. The trail is open all year and is primarily used for hiking and nature trips. Mt Longonot, at 2100m, is a pleasant way to spend a day. The views from the summit over to Naivasha and the Aberdares are spectacular, and the views of the crater within the mountain are so much more remarkable. The ascent is fairly simple if done slowly, and the average climber can reach the summit in an hour and a half if they follow a well-defined trail.

The Loroghi Hills, which are wild and out of the way but easily accessible, are one of the finest trekking areas in the country. The hills offer eye-catching views of the Rift Valley, as well as high mountain passes and the cool of deep forested valleys. Tracks wind their way up the Lesiolo escarpment, culminating in the 2580-metre-high Poror Peak. The real beauty of this region, however, is the chance to meet and spend time with the Samburu people, who call these hills ‘home’.
