10 Days Historical Trip to Eritrea

Day 1: Arrival in Asmara

Upon arrival at Asmara International Airport, you will be met, assisted and transferred to your reserved hotel,(Asmara Albergo Italia or similar Hotel – breakfast included). After breakfast, City tour, Asmara the capital of Eritrea, the city called as ” Piccola Roma” (Litle Rome) at an altitude of 2400 meters above sea level, literally created by Italians between the end of the 19th and beginning of 20th century, the city accommodates more than 400 art Deco Buildings officially recognized by UNESCO. The day will be dedicated to the visits of The Roman Catholic Cathedral, St Mary Coptic church, Al Khulafa al Rashedin mosque, Market (Vegetable, spices,

Day 2: Asmara to Keren

Travel to Keren second largest city, situated around 91 km(2:00 drive) northwest of Asmara at an elevation of 1390 meters above sea level.City tour Keren which was once a favorite resort for European visitors because of the temperate climate and fertile soil, exciting visits to the Monday camel market, old train station, second world war Italian and British cemeteries, Mariam Dearit (chapel inside the baobab tree), the new mosque Al Sahaba.

Day 3: Drive to Barentu

Drive to Barentu through Hagaz -Agordat-Mogolo- Western lowland With it is one main street there are many nomadic tribes such as Nara -Hedareb and Beniamer. Barentu is in the heart of Kunama territory. Stopover Mogolo for Tuesday market, small village 120km from Keren at 681mt of altitude from sea level then to Barentu afternoon Barentu city tour, is a market town that attracts many people from the surrounding areas, the dusty streets ripple with everyday life.

Overnight stay at the best available (very basic accommodation), Barentu.

Day 4: Drive to Asheshi market Cunama village

Drive to Wednesday Asheshi market Cunama village 10 km to the south from Barentu. The very colourful market that welcomes people from all the neighbouring villages mainly cunama. Afternoon, back to Asmara and overnight.

Day 5: Drive to Massawa Downhill

Drive to Massawa Downhill via Nefasit Embatkalla Ghinda Gahtelai road to the port city of Massawa. Enjoy the breathtaking scenery and exotic flora and fauna that are part of this evergreen so-called “Green Belt”. The road was built by Italians; beside it one sees also the railroad with the tunnels penetrating through the mountains. Afternoon visit to the Port city “Massawa ” built by Italians at the turn of the 20th century, a more than one thousand years old mosque is still standing to this day a great attraction to many visitors. Then the museum.

Overnight stay at Grand Dahlak Hotel Massawa.

Day 6: Excursion to Disse and Madot Islands

After breakfast at the Hotel Sea Excursion to Disse and Madot Islands. The islands in the archipelago of Dahlak are over 300. The trip by fast boat arrival in Disse am. 10:00

Day 7: Day trip to Disse Afar (ethnic group) fisherman community

After breakfast, move to Disse Afar (ethnic group) fisherman community then to Madot island (flat sandy Island) for swimming and snorkeling then to Durgam – Durghella Islands camping night in one of the two islands.

Day 8: Day trip top Rashaida family then Asmara

In the morning, you will proceed to The Rashaida family. The family is one of the nine ethnic groups in Eritrea. They are thought to be related to the Bedouin of Saudi Arabia (called Banu Abs) and are the only true nomadic people left in Eritrea. Rashaidains are primarily Sunni Muslim, and very few Christians are known to exist among the group. Late afternoon, proceed driving to Asmara for the overnight.

Day 9: Kunama tribe

Early in the morning, you leave the capital and proceed to the souht west of the country where the Kunama. Although some Kunama still practice traditional beliefs, most have adopted Christianity and Islam. Historically, the Kunama have been dominated by other ethnic groups and they are often forced from their traditional lands. 

Overnight stay at camp, Kunama Village.

Day 10: Asmara and Departure

After breakfast, continue the visit to the remaining part of Asmara. Afternoon visit of Markets for eventual purchases. 

The tour ends with a transfer to the Airport!
