Flights

The fastest way to hop between the key sites along the northern circuit is by aeroplane, for those with time constraints. A stable network of regular flights linking Addis Ababa, Bahir Dar, Gondar, Lalibela and Axum is operated by Ethiopian Airlines, the national carrier. Usually, there are also flights between Addis Ababa and several other cities, with Dire Dawa (for Harar), Mekele, Arba Minch, and Goba being the most important to tourists (for Bale Mountains National Park).

Car

In Ethiopia, only very few operators (including us) allow self drives. Driving conditions require a lot of getting used to, with vehicles, buses, horse-drawn carts, unpredictable livestock and unaware pedestrians jostling at their various places for road space. Setting up a coordinated tour with a local or foreign agency is much more common and recommended.

Railway

Ethiopia’s only intercity railway line links Addis Ababa to Djibouti via Awash and Dire Dawa. There is also a light railway system in Addis Ababa serving the four main corners.

Ethiopia Highlights

Ethiopia in Nature

Ethiopia is one of the most beautiful countries in Africa, and its landscapes are epic in both size and elegance. This is a spot where you can climb more than 3000m above sea level (the Simien and Bale mountains) or visit the Danakil Depression, the lowest place on the African continent. There are green highlands and stirring deserts in between, vertiginous canyons and sweeping savannahs, high plateaus, and extensive lakes.

Ethiopia in History

The only African nation to survive European colonialism, Ethiopia has maintained much of its cultural identity, and its story is one of the most interesting in Africa. It all starts with Lucy, one of our most celebrated ancient ancestors, with her obelisks and echoes of the Queen of Sheba traveling seamlessly through the domain of ancient Aksum. The ancients in Ethiopia left behind, unlike so many other places in Africa, some extraordinary monuments of faith and strength that serve as focal points for so many wonderful journeys.

Adventure in Ethiopia

Welcome to the most overlooked wildlife destination in Africa. The ultimate reward and the sighting of a lifetime is the Ethiopian wolf – the charismatic canid from the highlands which can be spotted around the Simien Mountains, Menz-Guassa, and Bale Mountains. Other beautiful wildlife that Ethiopia has to offer includes the gelada monkeys, who live in the high northern plateau, and the extravagantly horned and sure-footed walia ibex who is often spotted sticking to a rocky precipice. Bird watching in Ethiopia is among Africa’s finest. Furthermore, in Babille there are tigers and Nechisar’s crocodiles, while in Harar hyenas can sometimes be seen.
