Anbessa Travel’s Commitment to Sustainability and Community Engagement

At Anbessa Travel, our commitment to sustainability is not just a part of our operations—it’s the heart of everything we do. As the pioneering travel company in Ethiopia to achieve Travel Life certification, we take our role in environmental stewardship seriously. Sustainability involves adopting practices that not only reduce our environmental footprint but also contribute positively to local communities and preserve our cultural heritage for future generations.

What is sustainability?

Sustainability is about making choices that support the long-term health of our planet, our communities, and our economy. For us, this means reducing our carbon footprint, conserving natural resources, and promoting practices that lead to a healthier environment. We aim to balance our business goals with our responsibility to care for the world around us, ensuring that we leave a positive legacy for future generations.

Partnering for a Greener Ethiopia: Our Work with the Ethiopian Heritage Society

A central part of our sustainability efforts involves our ongoing collaboration with the Ethiopian Heritage Society, a respected organization dedicated to preserving Ethiopia’s rich cultural and natural heritage. Through this partnership, we are able to support and contribute to a variety of community-driven projects that align with our shared goals of sustainability and environmental preservation.

One of the standout projects from this collaboration is our tree-planting initiative. On August 17, 2024, the Anbessa Travel team, in partnership with the Ethiopian Heritage Society, organized a mission to plant native trees around the historic Entoto area. We have committed a one-hectare plot of land specifically for this purpose, with the aim of covering it entirely with indigenous plants. This initiative is designed not only to enhance the local environment but also to improve air quality and promote biodiversity in the region.

By planting these trees, we are making a direct and positive impact on the environment, contributing to the long-term health and sustainability of the area. Our efforts don’t stop there—our vision is to continue this tree-planting initiative by planting additional trees for every customer we serve. This ongoing commitment will help foster a greener Ethiopia, encouraging our clients to adopt eco-friendly practices and become more conscious of their environmental impact. Through these actions, we hope to inspire others to join us in our mission to protect and preserve Ethiopia’s natural beauty for future generations.

Community tourism and Inboch

Community tourism is another key area where Anbessa Travel makes a difference. This approach allows travelers to engage with local communities in meaningful ways, creating mutual benefits for both visitors and residents. By participating in community tourism, our travelers gain a deeper understanding of Ethiopia’s rich cultural heritage while supporting local economies.

Our efforts in community tourism are closely linked to our sustainability goals. One such initiative is our active participation in removing a harmful pesticide called Inboch from local agricultural practices. Inboch is another name for the water hyacinth, a fast-growing plant that spreads across water surfaces. It’s causing serious problems in Lake Tana, Ethiopia, by blocking sunlight and reducing oxygen in the water, which harms fish and other aquatic life. To control it, efforts like using machines to cut and remove the plant were underway. Additionally, Anbessa Travel has been involved in a significant reforestation project in Lalibela, where we replaced the invasive Bahir Zaf tree with numerous indigenous plants. These actions not only protect the environment but also help preserve traditional practices, support local artisans, and contribute to the overall well-being of the areas we visit.

Aligning HR Policies with Our Sustainability Goals

At Anbessa Travel, our commitment to sustainability also influences our HR policies. We believe that creating a work environment that supports green practices is essential to achieving our sustainability goals. Our HR policies encourage employees to adopt eco-friendly practices in their daily work and provide training on sustainability issues.

We also work to ensure that our staff is engaged and motivated to contribute to our sustainability initiatives. By aligning our HR policies with our environmental goals, we foster a culture of responsibility and support among our team members.

Working with Various Stake holders

Our collaboration with the Ethiopian Heritage Society is just one example of how we work with various stakeholders to advance our sustainability goals. We actively seek partnerships with organizations, businesses, and community groups that share our commitment to environmental stewardship and community development.

These partnerships enable us to leverage collective expertise and resources to achieve greater impact. Whether it’s through joint projects, community events, or shared initiatives, we are dedicated to working together to promote sustainability and make a positive difference.

Supporting green initiatives and preserving Heritage

Supporting green initiatives and preserving cultural heritage are central to our mission. By focusing on these areas, we not only contribute to environmental conservation but also celebrate and protect Ethiopia’s unique cultural legacy. Our initiatives, such as tree planting and community tourism, are designed to support both our natural environment and our rich heritage.

We are proud to support Ethiopia’s national Green Legacy Initiative, which aims to plant over 6.5 billion tree seedlings in the 2024 planting season. By integrating sustainability into every aspect of our business, we hope to make a lasting positive impact. Our goal is to inspire others to adopt similar practices and join us in building a greener, more sustainable future.

In conclusion, Anbessa Travel is proud to lead the way in responsible travel through our dedication to sustainability and community engagement. As the first travel company in Ethiopia to achieve Travel Life certification, we are committed to reducing our carbon footprint, supporting local communities, and preserving our cultural heritage.

From our tree-planting initiatives around Entoto to our efforts in community tourism and eco-friendly travel, we are continually striving to make a positive impact. Our partnerships with organizations like the Ethiopian Heritage Society and our focus on sustainable practices reflect our deep commitment to creating a better world for future generations.
